The Dynamics of Assortative Mating in Germany

چکیده
October 2008 Preliminary version Please do not quote! Abstract. This paper examines the patterns of educational assortative mating in East and West Germany. In the literature it is well known that individuals do not mate randomly according to social and cultural traits. Marrying within a socio-economic group can lead to polarization and exacerbating economic inequality. In the US, there is a compelling body of evidence indicating that the educational similarity of spouses has steadily increased during the at least last four decades. Yet, for Germany little is known about actual patterns of educational assortative mating. Our empirical analysis for Germany shows that educational assortative mating has increased signi cantly for East and West Germany during the last 15 and 30 years, respectively. To control for increases in the educational attainment we apply di erent log-linear methods. The results point out that the observed changes in assortative mating in East and West Germany might be explained by changes in partner preferences regarding education. However, these changes di er by educational group. An other reason could be found in changes in the di culty of crossing educational barriers. JEL classi cation: I20, J12

Pairing dynamics and the origin of species.
Whether sexual selection alone can drive the evolution of assortative mating in the presence of gene flow is a long-standing question in evolutionary biology. Here, we report a role for pairing dynamics of individuals when mate choice is mutual, which is sufficient for the evolution of assortative mating by sexual selection alone in the presence of gene flow. Through behavioural observation, in...
متن کاملEvolution of Assortative Mating in a Population Expressing Dominance
In this article, we study the influence of dominance on the evolution of assortative mating. We perform a population-genetic analysis of a two-locus two-allele model. We consider a quantitative trait that is under a mixture of frequency-independent stabilizing selection and density- and frequency-dependent selection caused by intraspecific competition for a continuum of resources. The trait is ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Assortative Mating on the Coexistence of a Hybridogenetic Waterfrog and Its Sexual Host.
In central Europe, the hybridogenetic waterfrog Rana esculenta, a hybrid between Rana ridibunda and Rana lessonae, lives in sympatry with one of its parental species, the poolfrog Rana lessonae. As R. esculenta has to backcross constantly with R. lessonae in order to produce viable offspring, this coexistence is obligatory for R. esculenta. Since R. esculenta has a higher primary fitness than R...

Mate choice matters for inclusive fitness, household economic efficiency, assimilation, stratification, and economic inequalities in society. In positive assortative mating, people pair with someone who resembles them along a trait, whereas in negative assortative mating, people pair with someone who differs from them along a trait. In industrial nations, people tend to follow positive assortat...
متن کاملAssortative mating for fitness and the evolution of recombination.
To understand selection on recombination, we need to consider how linkage disequilibria develop and how recombination alters these disequilibria. Any factor that affects the development of disequilibria, including nonrandom mating, can potentially change selection on recombination. Assortative mating is known to affect linkage disequilibria but its effects on the evolution of recombination have...
